BURLINGAME, Calif., January 13, 2015—CM Security, Cheetah Mobile’s (NYSE: CMCM) top-rated free mobile security application, surpassed 100 million users on December 28, 2014 – a mere 12 months after its initial release. The simple, safe and speedy mobile anti-virus app is the second most downloaded among all utility/tool apps on the Google Play store. With an overall review score of 4.7 stars, CM Security tops the list in 37 countries and was ranked No. 1 by AV-TEST multiple times throughout 2014.
Since its debut, CM Security has prevented 8 million viruses and fixed 137 million potential vulnerabilities for its users worldwide. With the rise of mobile threats targeting the growing number of Android smartphone and tablet users, CM fills a critical need for stronger identity theft protection and prevention in a social media-driven and e-commerce world. CM Security has resolved an array of cases, from the Heartbleed Bug and US retailer Target’s credit card document leak, to the recent ShellShock or Bash Bug virus, a vulnerability affecting rooted or jailbroken mobile devices. In just three weeks, CM Security detected more than 1,700 apps threatened by ShellShock and offered immediate solutions for its users.
“Our research and development team behind the app monitors security news worldwide and adds solutions to our products as soon as we are alerted of threats,” said Zhao Min, Product Director of CM Security. “In fact, CM Security published 254 versions and updates in 2014 alone, and the app sends timely notifications of significant mobile and internet security issues in order to ensure users remain informed of the latest threats.”
According to Cheetah Mobile’s 2014 Security Report, the company’s security lab monitored 744 data or document leaks last year affecting more than 8.17 million people – more than twice as many as in 2013. Additionally, the report found that 40% of cyber-attacks and threats targeted personal account documents, followed by financial data (26%), credit card information (20%), and medical information (10%). The lab collected 2,800 samples of malware, viruses and vulnerabilities, 60% of which were related to mobile payments.
“Security is, without a doubt, one of the most important concerns in the mobile internet age,” added Chen Yong, Senior Vice President, Cheetah Mobile. “As the leading anti-virus app on the market, security is the major focus, but users today need a complete portfolio of tools to fully optimize their mobile experience.”
This is why CM Security includes an ‘App Lock’ function that locks other apps, photos and settings so only the owner can access those applications. The ‘Locate Family’ feature lets the user know where friends and family are located. The app also serves as a ‘Find My Phone’ tool to help users pinpoint the location of their mobile device on a map in the case of loss or theft.
